 TUTORING

Growing together through reading

Twice a week, Reach teens spend time at local elementary schools tutoring second and third graders. During twice-weekly training sessions led by professional instructors, the teens create lesson plans to improve the younger students’ reading skills. Along the way, their own reading improves.

By focusing on the five core literacy principles of phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, and text comprehension, both the teens and young students benefit from small group or individualized instruction. Thanks to our teen tutors – some equipped with books they authored themselves – our third graders grow as readers and build lasting connections with their tutors. At the same time, the teens develop the skills and confidence to become leaders in their own classrooms and beyond.
